The end of the world myth, told by Davi Koperawa, Yanomami shaman, says that, once the harmony of life in the universe is broken, the sky – understood as “the stuff which is above us” in the Yanomami idiom – collapses over all the ones who are below it, and not only over the forest peoples. In face of so many catastrophes and barbarities haunting us, leaving us dumbfounded each and every day, in this context of drastic climate changes darkening the future, what else can be done? How to think of other ways of carrying out and acting? What can each one of us do, in their own way, to hold the sky?

There’s no time to waste before everything collapses. The sky is already falling down, and here we are living below it. Let’s join our more intimate forces to keep this sky. Each one in their own way.

In the district of Maré we dance to the rhythm of machines and cars, helicopters, sirens, we dance under a scalding heat, we dance in the rain and the storm, we dance as an offering and as a tribute, to not disappear, to last and to rot, to move the air and to expand ourselves, to dream and to visit gloomy places, to turn into fireflies, to be weak and to resist. We dance to find a way of surviving in this upside down world.

Dancing to hold the sky. That’s what we can do. To avoid the sky falling down… we dance.
